The Dambusters Heritage Biplane Flight
Step back into the 1940s and embark on an extraordinary journey that retraces the gruelling, clandestine training runs of the young volunteer airmen of the legendary 617 Squadron. Getting airborne from Netherthorpe and flying west into the Peak District, you will soar toward the dramatic stone towers of the Derwent and Howden Dams—the very valley where those courageous crews mastered the art of low level flying to prepare for Operation Chastise.
Before the famous night raid ever took place, young volunteers, many barely in their early twenties faced the punishing task of learning to hold Lancaster bombers steady at 220 mph, skimming at a terrifyingly low 60 feet above the water. While we will follow these exact historic routes at a safe, comfortable cruising height rather than a white knuckle low level skim, this flight honours their incredible dedication, allowing you to follow in the slipstream of those historic training paths over the Peak District’s breath taking reservoirs and rolling countryside.
You will take to the skies aboard our Stampe SV.4 biplane. While our aircraft is not the original, which now proudly resides in the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History in Brussels, our aircraft flies under special permission granted directly by the Royal Air Force to display authentic 1940s camouflage and the legendary serial number MX457.
These markings honour a truly one of a kind piece of aviation history: in 1941, the original aircraft, registered as OO-ATD, was secretly restored under enemy occupation before two Belgian airmen flew it across the English Channel to freedom. Upon its safe arrival in England, it was impressed into military service, becoming the only Stampe ever to be registered in the RAF serials as MX457.
